The text details techniques for drawing the shortened proportions of legs and thighs using reference lines and shadows. Instructions are provided in Italian, French, Dutch, and German, emphasizing careful consideration of light and perspective. The methods involve marking and intersecting lines to achieve accurate anatomical proportions.
The Second Part
Problem III.
Particularities of the Shortened Legs and Thighs.
The legs and thighs shortened like the previous figure require drawing perpendicular lines from the top of the leg and thigh seen from the side; where the sunlight shines from above, down to the horizontal line marked A. Diagonally return the reflection from this to the vertical line marked B. Consider the similar distances on these lines at the horizontal line marked A and create internal marks along line B. At this intersection, draw a line to form the shadows of the first figure viewed from the side, maintaining the proportions. Then draw lines perpendicularly to the figure of the shortened legs and thighs above the line marked A. The intersections of these lines will help form the figure of the shortened legs and thighs, considering the shadows from the first figure.
Particularities of the Shortened Legs and Thighs (French Version)
The legs and thighs shorten like the previous figures by drawing perpendicular lines from the top of the leg and thigh seen from the side where the sun shines above down to the line at level A. Reflect diagonally the reflection to line B, maintaining similar distance on line A. Draw lines at marked levels, considering the proportions for creating the shadows of the first figure viewed from the side. Draw perpendicular lines to the figure of the shortened legs and thighs above line A, using intersections to form the figure of the shortened legs and thighs through the shadows of the first figure.
On Shortening the Legs and Thighs (Dutch Version)
The legs and thighs are shortened by drawing lines with pointed indications from the upright position of the legs, visible from the side by sunlight. From the water level line marked A, reflect above to the hanging lines marked A, with intersections of these lines forming shadows. Using these intersections as reference, create shadows on the figures of the legs and thighs by extending lines along the water level, taking account of their positions and the sunlight.
The Nature of Shortening Legs and Thighs (German Version)
The legs and thighs shorten as in previous illustrations, by designating lines with points extending from the side perspective of the legs and thighs where the sun is visible. Mark the water level line with A and reflect with the intersecting lines forming the shadows to create the figure. Using the intersections as guide the figures of the legs and thighs are constructed, influenced by the shadow from the sun on these figures.
Translation Notes:
- The term "water level" refers to a horizontal reference line used for determining proportions and alignment.
- There are multiple languages on the page (Italian, French, Dutch, and German), each giving instructions on artistic anatomical proportions.
