The text discusses how to depict the eye, which is a principal part of the face, using simple geometric shapes. It explains dividing an oval into equal parts and describes forming the eye's profile using a triangle and circle to guide the drawing. The guide also illustrates the proportions for the upper and lower lips using specific geometric representations.
The First Part
VI.
Since the eye is one of the main parts of the sight, I will therefore begin to talk about it, showing you with an easy figure, which you will conform to, that the figures A & B show you. That is, by an oval figure, which is divided into two equal parts by a perpendicular line C D, and then form a circle in the way shown in my third figure M for which you will know how the eye will be in the actual form. You will take half of B C D, which represents the proportion of the eye in profile, and for this reason, I shall show you this next with a figure, showing that the face is another principal part, also. I will demonstrate with a triangle figure, using the letters E F G, which I call a triangle, as the triangle in my third figure is divided by a perpendicular line from letter E AH. In this triangle, I write a circle, forming a semi-circle touching the line from E to G, and this semi-circle forms the middle of the profile of the nose, and with a triangle, as marked with letters I K & L for the third part of the face. Additionally, I draw the lips with a line not perfectly straight but following the representation of M N & N, which shows the figure O, representing the upper lip, and for the lower lips, I show a semi-circle with the letters P Q.
Translation Notes:
- Figura Ovo: A term used for an oval figure. Alternate translations could include 'egg-shaped' or 'elliptical'.
