Indeed, we have also noticed that tightrope walkers are much more secure on the rope when they move quickly and proceed skillfully, rather than when they move slowly. We often see them prepare slowly and securely, attempting to move under a certain line of motion; and thus they part from it again, because a sudden change of direction would cause them to fall, similarly to those standing in a hoop. We believe it arises from no other reason than that a person moving slowly or stopping often becomes tired and weary in the legs, more so than when they maintain a firm and efficient pace; because a person in a slow movement is heavier than in a quick one, and there they put more weight repeatedly on the legs, which lasts longer than in a quick motion, thus tiring the legs more than when they are moved quickly and frequently freed from their weight. One understands more clearly that in every step the entire weight of the body transfers onto the planted foot; now we know how the weight rests there longer, and how that part becomes more fatigued each time. Similarly, when a person pulls, lifts, or drags something behind them, whether with a rope through a pulley, hook, or otherwise, the weight becomes much heavier.
