This text describes a drawing device using a flat mirror suspended by pivots, which allows the artist to project and trace images. The device involves adjusting the mirror's angle to reflect objects clearly onto paper placed at the bottom of a box. It details how to secure the mirror and explains the use of vellum and different tools for tracing. The method is best suited for small-scale portraits due to inherent difficulties in larger formats.
DRAWING
A flat mirror that will be suspended by two pivots, allowing you to adjust it to any desired angle.
The machine thus constructed should be placed on a table, so that the person wishing to draw faces away from the objects they want to depict. A piece of white paper should be placed at the bottom of the box, which may be covered with a leather, cloth, or other fabric cover, directly under the pipe DE, which should be raised or lowered until the objects appear sharply on the paper beneath.
To project the representation of these objects through the convex glass of the pipe, adjust the inclination of the mirror using a string attached at the top of its frame, which passes through a small opening made at the top of the box F, and can be pulled more or less by the person whose head is inside the box to draw the objects. Once the mirror is inclined to the desired angle, the string can be secured to a small nail or hook fixed to one of the inner sides of the machine.
When the objects are clearly represented on the paper, it only requires following the outlines with a pen or pencil: if it's vellum, a silver or brass point is sufficient.
If one wants to draw a print, it should be placed directly in front of the mirror, exposed to sunlight or light, so that it projects all the outlines reflected inside the box, through the convex glass enclosed in the cylinder DE.
Using this method, one can draw the portraits of a man, a woman, etc., but only on a small scale, as it would be very difficult to successfully produce them on a larger scale for the reasons previously mentioned (26).
