The Drawing.

Previously, almost completely erase by gently rubbing breadcrumb over the line to remove the incorrect outlines of the sketch. One should observe to make this line stronger on the shadow side and keep it more delicate on the side from which the light comes.

Good pencils greatly contribute to easy and pleasurable drawing, which is why attention should be given to choosing them well. Generally, three types of stone are used for sharpening for drawing: namely, sanguine or red chalk, black stone known as black crayon, and graphite. The quality of these pencils is in being tender and soft, without any grain or grit. To keep them in this condition, they should be stored in a place that is not too dry, which would harden them; they will be better preserved in a cool and humid place; but they should only be taken out as needed.

What is meant by sketching.

As we have just mentioned that when starting a drawing, one should first sketch, it is good to explain here what is meant by this term. Sketching is to appear with faint and few lines, a slight but general idea of what one intends to make or imitate, so that if one makes a mistake in the overall layout of the work, it can be corrected. Thus, the first ideas of the subject one wants to represent, and that are first thrown on the paper, are called sketches, and this method of drawing is called sketching, from the Italian word Schizzare, which means literally, splatter, because these are just trials where colors appear as if splashed on.

Translation Notes:

- 'Sanguine' is a type of red chalk used in drawing.
