Artist
John Singer Sargent
Year
ca. 1875
Medium
Graphite on off-white wove paper
I love this simple, quick, informal drawing by the master Sargent. It's the perfect sketchbook story: the artist is sitting around, an interesting subject in interesting light captures the imagination, and with the masterful skill he quickly produces a fun and simple drawing that captures a mood, a personality, and a moment.
This kind of moment is what all the effort that goes into studying drawing, portrait drawing, anatomy, hands, facial features, light and dark, all is for. Snapping a quick photo of the same scene would never capture the the same mood or feeling in quite the same way.
