The text describes components and adjustments of a drawing machine, notably how the box is supported by wooden pieces and secured with iron pegs. It explains adjusting the box's position, including tilting mechanisms and attaching a mirror using a sliding ruler. The machine's transportability is highlighted, alongside securing methods to prevent sliding and incorporating elements like a small turret and painted canvas.
METHOD FOR LEARNING
32. At each side beneath the box, there is a piece of wood similar to the one marked R (Figure 4), which serves to support the box on its stand, where it is fixed with four iron pegs. Two of these pegs pass on each side through the foot via the holes N, P, & in the pieces I just mentioned through the holes T, V, when one wants the bottom of the box to be horizontal, or through those marked T, O, when one wishes to tilt it slightly.
33. Sometimes, it's necessary to position the box further forward on its stand, which is done by using the holes Q & S, instead of holes N & P. Often in these cases, it is advantageous to tilt the box a bit backward: this can be done by passing the peg that is in S through the hole X, which is drilled in a small piece of wood attached against the machine: a similar hole is made on the other side.
34. Above the machine, a box or small turret similar to the one described (9 & 10) is made to slide, but with the only difference that it must be smaller. Above this small turret Y, there are two small iron bars Z, Z, which serve to slide a ruler to which a mirror is attached, as previously mentioned (No. 12). By this means, the mirror is given the position it has in H, in Figure 1 which represents the first machine.
35. The machine just described is extremely easy to transport; for then the box BEC is rested on the two traverses 2, 3, & 4, 5, each having a notch within to prevent the box from sliding. In this situation, the ABCD opening is at the top: the small turret Y is then put into the box with the ruler & mirror previously mentioned (No. 12). The black painted canvas is also inserted, after the two have been removed.
Translation Notes
- The term "boîte" is translated as "box," which in this context refers to a component of a drawing machine.
- "Traverse" refers to cross-pieces or beams within the machine setup.
